Why Regular Consumption Of Zobo Drink With Hypertension Medication Should Be Avoided —Expert

The consumption of hibiscus tea or zobo is growing in popularity owing to accumulating evidence that it has benefits against excess weight, constipation, upset stomach, diabetes and can safely reduce blood pressure and cholesterol, two major risk factors for cardiovascular disease.

 Among the best-described health benefits of Hibiscus sabdariffa, also commonly referred to as roselle, is blood pressure control for hypertension and many patients on conventional antihypertensive may also consume iced zobo drink to beat the increasing atmospheric temperature.

Studies have shown that a two-week period of zobo extract administration could produce the antihypertensive activity. However, in a new study, experts warn against long term consumption of zobo drink by individuals on captopril, a conventional hypertension medication.

According to them, regular intake of zobo drink with captopril, one of the angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor may be potentially dangerous. This could lead to a lowering of the blood pressure than initially planned.

Angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors such as captopril dilate the blood vessels to lower hypertension or treat heart failure.

Even though the intake of the antihypertensive with zobo drink does not influence the antihypertensive potency of captopril or cause any side effects, they said two weeks of regular intake of zobo drink with captopril can reduce the efficacy of the drug. This was contained in the 2020 edition of Evidence-based Complementary and Alternative Medicine.

Ingestion of zobo drink with conventional medicines such as paracetamol, chloroquine and antibiotics in many communities are very common, without regard to the possibility of herb-drug interactions. Being natural products, individuals wrongly believe they are always safe to be taken with drugs.

When herbal therapies and drugs (prescription or non-prescription medications) are used together, they can interact in the body, causing changes in the way the herbs and/or the drugs work. Such changes are called herb-drug interactions. They can be beneficial or harmful, depending on the type of interaction.

More than 300 species of hibiscus can be found around the world and most of its varieties are used as ornamentals. However, there are two main types of Hibiscus sabdariffa cultivated for its jute-like fiber and its edible calyces. Its infusion made from its bright red calyces, which is commonly called zobo, is consumed hot or cold. This tea is often sweetened with sugar.

For the study on the possible effect of prolonged administration of zobo extract on captopril in the body, male rats were divided into two groups of six. The first group received a single dose of captopril suspension while the second group received zobo daily for two weeks prior to the same captopril dose.

Multiple blood samples were collected at predetermined times after the antihypertensive was administration and its concentration in these blood samples were assessed using ultrahigh-pressure liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry.

Previously, experts at the Usman Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, and Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, said taking zobo along with the prescription drug lisinopril, a blood pressure medication, ensures its better effectiveness in blood pressure control.

The availability of lisinopril alone and in the presence of Hibiscus tea was determined at the stomach, intestine and blood pH.

The 2019 study, which involved I. Nasir, M. Aminu, A.M. Ismail, A Salisu and G Magaji, published in the Tropical Journal of Pharmaceutical Research, found that taking lisinopril with zobo drink or hibiscus tea could enhance its availability consequent to the increased dissolution of lisinopril in simulated gastric, intestinal and blood pH.

Dr I. Nasir declared: “It is a common practice to see individuals taking a prescription drug for antihypertensive medications outside the hospital while also taking zobo drink and moringa. They believe that when they take it together, they get better. And when you check their blood pressure, it would have dropped miraculously.”

He added “the result of the study has proven that the zobo drink helps in checking their high blood pressure.”

According to him, “its pharmacological effect will definitely be seen. In fact, there is a banker; all that she takes in the morning for her hypertension is the sour zobo drink which contains no additive like sugar.

Many studies have shown that zobo drink has some antihypertensive effect. In fact, some prescribers recommend that instead of using water to swallow the drug, they could use a zobo drink. But they advise not to take zobo drink that contains sugar.”

The researchers, however, said further studies on the effect of varying concentrations of zobo on the bioavailability of lisinopril would still need to be evaluated.

However, people taking blood pressure medications like the Angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors such as lisinopril should avoid consuming large amounts of zobo as well as foods high in potassium including avocados, oranges and orange juice, potatoes, spinach, tomatoes and tomato sauce.

Borno: Zulum secures FGC admissions for 959 out of school girls, boys 

Borno State Governor, Prof Babagana Umara Zulum, has facilitated admissions, into Federal Government Colleges for 959 boys and girls from 16 local government areas, who had been out of school as a result of displacements by Boko Haram.

Of the 959 citizens, admissions were secured for 774 girls into Federal Government Girls College, Monguno which currently operates a temporary site in Maiduguri; while 185 boys were taken to Federal Government College, Maiduguri.

In the first phase of implementing Zulum’s multi-dimensional strategies on basic education, the executive secretary of the newly established Borno State Education Trust Fund, Alhaji Maina Yaumi, on Wednesday formally welcomed 185 boys into JSS 1 at FGC Maiduguri for the commencement of studies.

Governor Zulum had already approved an initial N60m for sponsorship of the 774 girls going to FGGC Monguno, and over N37m, for the 185 boys now at FGC, Maiduguri, with an amount combining N32,429,500 for payment of school fees, uniforms and shoes, and N5m for procurement of mattresses and other essential needs.

The boys were drawn from 16 local government areas with a most backward number of school enrollments in which long displaced Abadam was given the highest number of 17 slots, followed by Guzamala which got 15 slots, Marte-13, Maga-13, Mobbar-12, Kala-Balge, 11, Konduga 10, Ngala 10, Magumeri 10, Bama 10, Gubio 10, Dikwa 10, Kaga 10, Kukawa 10, Nganzai 10 and Monguno-9 slots.

Yaumi charged the students to focus on their studies in line with Governor Zulum’s directive to all of them.

FGC, Maiduguri’s principal, Mallam Umar Habeeb Jibrin, in his welcome address, thanked Governor Zulum for what he described as an unusually unique initiative, saying since the school was established in 1973, it was the first time such a high number of students have secured admission and sponsored by Government.

The school, through its Vice Principal, Academics, Mallam AbdulAzeez Kado, announced that a special committee was going to be formed to be organizing extra lessons, especially in English Language and Mathematics as well as special orientation for the 185 boys to enable them to fully acclimatize to the new environment.

Kado promised that the management of FGC, Maiduguri, would work hard to make the new students among the best of its students in years to come.

The Education Trust Fund is currently working on a similar usher in of the 774 girls admitted into FGGC, Monguno, as soon as some ongoing procedures are completed.

Many people have been killed and scores injured on Tuesday when Boko Haram fighters launched multiple attacks on Maiduguri, the Borno State capital. Nine 

Nine boys were killed while playing football at Gwange, near the house of the late General Mamman Shuwa, when rockets landed in the area, witnesses said.

Four people have been confirmed dead in our area, known as Adam Kolo,” said a Maiduguri based journalists, Ali Chiroma.

“The explosive fell a few metres from our house. All the people that sustained injuries have been rushed to the UMTH for treatment,” he said.

Adults including men and women as well as children were among the fatalities, with sources saying some of the victims have lost their limbs.

The areas worst affected are Kalere, behind the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH); Gwange; Adam Kolo, not far from the Shehu of Borno’s Palace and adjoining densely populated areas.

Residents and security sources said following the first set of bombs launched at densely populated areas of the city, the terrorists made attempts to use the opportunity to go into the town but were repelled.

It was the first major and audacious assault on Maiduguri in years, heightening fears among residents that the terrorists might be lurking around, observers said.

A top security source said the terrorists deployed mortar bombs and rocket launchers from the outskirt of Maiduguri and targeted the civilian population, killing many and inflicting serious injuries in others.

It was learnt that the terrorists fired the first assault around 6.04 pm and sustained the attacks for over 30 minutes, prompting thunderous sound that caused a scare as people scampered for safety.

Some of the victims were rushed to UMTH while others were taken to the Specialists Hospital around the Post Office area.

Governor Babagana Zulum was at the UMTH where he sympathized with the injured.

All efforts to reach out to the military in Maiduguri; NEMA and SEMA, for official comments were not successful.

Victims soaked in blood in hospitals

At the UMTH along Bama Road, humanitarian workers, family of victims and acquaintances rushed their injured loved ones for treatment.

There was high traffic at the Accident and Emergency Unit of the hospital with relatives struggling to get the attention of health workers to treat the injured.

We would most likely stabilise some of the injured but the case of some of them is bad,” a doctor said, asking for anonymity.

“Some of the victims would require surgery and others would need blood transfusion. There are some who lost their limb, he said.

Another source at the hospital confirmed that they have 9 dead bodies brought to the facility following the multiple blasts in Maiduguri.

“It is an overwhelming situation; we have many injured persons currently receiving treatment now,” he said.
It was learnt that in other areas that similar attacks were launched, families of people that sustained serious injuries were treated at private clinics and taken back home long before the arrival of humanitarian workers.

How the attack was launched

A security source said dozens of terrorists mobilised towards Maiduguri with some of them taking cover in the bush, while those with lethal weapons advanced and took a cover in trenches.

A resident, Modu Lawal, said: “I was at a friend’s house located near the UMTH when I heard the violent explosions. I saw people running to places of safety and I had to stay at my friend’s.

Lawal said his brother later told him on the phone that another device fired by the attackers injured people at the Gwange area.

Fighter jets and helicopter gunships were deployed and hovered in the sky, forcing the attackers to retreat.

The surprising attack came barely two hours after the military claimed to have recaptured Marte town and three other communities seized by the insurgents a week ago.

This ornament has come to be one of the most controversial fashion accessory worn by ladies in Nigeria.

While some see it as an ordinary fashion accessory, others consider ladies who wear them as ‘Ashewos’, a local parlance for commercial sex workers or lesbians.

This article discusses anklet from the socio-cultural perspective of the three major ethnic groups in Nigeria – Hausa, Igbo and Yoruba. These ethnic groups are popular and are known to have a rich culture. They have also been known to have done so much in the preservation of their cultural heritage. 

The culture of the Hausa people is largely dictated by Islamic practices. In fact, the parameters on which the Hausa people live is the doctrine of Islam. To the Hausa, a woman is free to wear anklets. But in doing so, she should not allow any other person, except her husband, see them on her. As Islam equally dictates, women should not equally wear anklets outside the confines of their matrimonial home. The basis for this instruction is derived from the Holy Quran.

The Holy Quran forbids women to wear anklet bracelets outside of her husband’s house. It is forbidden for the anklet worn by women to jingle or produce sound to the hearing of non-Mahram men – those who are Islamically unlawful.

Anklets/Internet It is written, “And let them not stamp their feet so as to reveal what they hide of their adornment. And repent to Allah all of you, O believer, that you may be successful. {Quran 24:31}

The feet of a woman are part of her Awrah – parts of the body that Islam mandates to be covered. They should be covered from the sight of non-Mahram men. This is in line with the view of most Muslim scholars, may Allah have mercy on them. On the other hand, a woman is free to wear golden ornament of any kind. She can wear a wrist bracelet. She can wear an ankle bracelet or any other ornament of her choosing. She can wear them to any outing, provided that no alien man sees them or hears the sound they make. Despite this, there are Hausa ladies who wear anklets on their wedding day.

Igbo

Igbo women of Eastern Nigeria wear anklets. They do so during cultural dance, festivals and other major cultural ceremonies, such as coronations or chieftaincy conferment. The anklets worn by Igbo women are usually made with brass or beads. In some cases, it is mandatory for young maidens to wear anklets, because it makes them more fashionable. However, in the recent days, anklets are worn to exhibit social status of titled men and their spouses. In some parts of Igbo land, elephant tusks are used to make anklets. Till date, anklets made from elephant tusks are worn by wealthy people.

 What this implies is that the wearing of anklets by ladies in Igbo land is done to express, if not, show prestige, beauty and wealth.

Yoruba

Bukola Adeyemi maintained in her book, Dress in the Making of African Identity that coral anklets were worn by Owo Chiefs – male and female – as insignia. Votaries and worshippers of deities also wear anklets as part of insignia of office and to identify them as children of spirits.

Kings and chiefs in Yoruba land equally wear beads. The wearing of beads by this group of people was not only ornamental but symbolic. A Yoruba adage goes: “Ade ori ni to oba; ileke ni ti awon ijoye,” meaning: kings are known for their crowns and chiefs for their beads.

Bliss added that,“If I have my way I will probably wear two at a time. How does it translate? How does it relate? For me, anklets are just like any other thing like rings that you wear on your fingers like earrings in your ears. So, people wear them. Let them wear them.

In her understanding of culture, she fires on and interrogates: “If you want to wear it for a cultural reason., you can say I’m a Yoruba person, and this is part of my culture and when you want to do your Yoruba cultural dance, you can wear anklets on your leg and stuff. So, is it only permissible for times like that? Why is it illegal or a crime or a sin?”

Bliss added that Christianity does not have any differing view regarding the wearing of anklets. It rather instructs followers to be modest. She reveals it this way:

“My religion say to be modest do not let your beauty to be of out world or on your appearance. You see, the Bible is eternal, the world we live in is different and I don’t want to believe that the people in the Bible did not wear anklets or something. For me, it doesn’t take away the fact that I’m connected to God or that I’m a child of God, and I’m going make Heaven.

Bliss further enlightens that there is no correspondence between wearing anklets and pleasing God. She says: “It doesn’t change that for me. You don’t have to wear anklets or not to be fit for the kingdom of God. There are a whole lot of things that can disqualify you. So why focus on menial things that don’t make sense. It’s my life I want to wear anklets and that’s why I wear them. All of these people having diverse opinions and views, of course, they are welcome as long as you are not imposing a law on what my own lifestyle should be.

“It is not easy, Walahi! They were threatening us and beating the men. They really beat the hell out of the men but all they wanted from us was money. They kept demanding money from us. They gave us dirty water to drink.

Their ammunition is out of this world. I have never seen those kind of arms in my life. They have different kinds of assorted weapons. They are more than 1,000 in the bush.

I am happy now that I have regained freedom. I thank God that I am still alive because I thought I would not come out alive,” she said.

Starving in the forest

Thirty-eight-year-old Muhammed Kindagi, a civil servant with the Niger State Science and Technical School Board, said he was abducted while returning from a friend’s wedding.

Immediately we met the bandits, they asked us to park our car and they started shooting before we came out of the car. The bullet tossed my head. When I started seeing blood, I thought the end had come.

We trekked for 24 hours daily. They usually take us one after the other. That was what we did from the time we were kidnapped till the following morning, ” Kindagi said.

Constant beating

He said they fed twice daily, morning and evening, and drank contaminated water.

If we eat food in the morning, we won’t eat another one till evening again. They gave us contaminated water to drink. We were made to cook by ourselves because they asked us to cook. We were sleeping on bare floor in the bush. We were not tied but guns were pointed at our heads and they were beating us constantly.

We met one victim in the camp when we got there. We don’t know how many of the bandits that waylaid us that day but we met a lot of them on our way into the bush. The first day, they took us to a hill, from there we moved under a mango tree. On the third day, we moved inside the bush which was our final destination before we got rescued, “he narrated.

They beat our women too. There is one useless one among them who didn’t bother whether you are a woman or man before he starts beating you. They beat us with stick. As they are beating us, they are asking us to bring money. All of them are Fulani but they communicated to us in Hausa while they spoke Fulani within themselves.

They asked us to forgive them and we said we had forgiven them and that they should forgive us too so that we could leave the bush.”

Kept a few distance away from Kagara students

He also disclosed that they were separated from the Kagara students who were kept at a close distance.

His story isn’t different from that of Hamza Muhammed Buhari, who said he had a tough time with the “enemies”.

We were on our way to Minna and a car signaled to us to stop and we did. People in the car were shaking. Some said we should go back but somebody from outside said they were vigilantes, and that made us proceed. After we moved, we were attacked by the bandits numbering about ten; they started shooting sporadically.

Prefential treatment for women

We cannot say precisely where we were taken after the abduction, we were just moving into the bush for hours. When we got to a place, we would rest and continue with the movement again and they kept beating us but they used their motorcycles to carry the women but men trekked throughout.

They starved us and only gave us a handful of food. We cooked rice with contaminated water. We were tortured daily. It is indeed bad and terrible,” he said.

The victims have been taken to the hospital.

The federal government has introduced control mechanisms to forestall the infiltration of the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS) platform by ghost workers. The move followed the implementation of the Human Resource (HR) component of the IPPIS in the Federal Civil Service.

The initiative was contained in a circular issued by the Head of Civil Service of the Federation, Dr. Folasade Yemi-Esan. The circular, titled, New Procedure for enrolment of Federal Civil Service Employees on the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS) ref HCSF/CMO/IPPIS1/1/502,” reminded ministries of the need to obtain waiver for employment from the Office of the Head of Service of the Federation (OHCSF).

Furthermore, federal ministries were enjoined to obtain clearance from the Budget Office of the Federation indicating budgetary provisions in the relevant year for the payment of salaries of the officers to be recruited.

Yemi-Esan detailed procedure that must be followed before new employees can be enrolled on the IPPIS platform. According to her, the process requires that all waivers granted by the OHCSF and appointment letters issued by Federal Civil Service Commission (FCSC) must be submitted to the OHCSF for confirmation and authentication.

Newly recruited employees, irrespective of their pool offices, must also be documented at the OHCSF before proceeding to their relevant ministries of deployment.

In the case of officers on salary Grade Level 06 and below, the respective ministries will forward the list of all newly recruited officers to the OHCSF for authentication of waiver after which the OHCSF, upon documentation of all employees, and subsequent deployment, will open the registration portal and notify the ministries to complete the online registration forms, print out the confirmation slips (to be signed by the Permanent Secretary and Director, Human Resource Management), and submit same to OHCSF.

The ministries will thereafter forward the list of the new employees to the OHCSF, IPPIS-SW, for verification of document. After verification of each employee, the IPPIS-SW will scan all the relevant documents for uploading onto the IPPIS platform; and capture their biometrics before pay-rolling.

In order to clear all pending personnel and pay-rolling issues, a committee, comprising relevant stakeholders, has been constituted to authenticate all waivers and appointment letters of staff of all core ministries issued by the Federal Civil Service Commission (FCSC) or ministries for GL 06 officers and below in order to facilitate their enrolment on IPPIS platform.

The circular further requested all ministries to forward the list and documents of all newly recruited officers from the core ministries already enrolled on the IPPIS platform to the Director, IPPIS-SW.

UPDATE-On TCN Borno Power Supply

TCN, Borno Govt to restore power supply in Maiduguri and environs

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) with the support of Borno State Government has mobilised to ensure quick restoration of electricity supply to Maiduguri and environs.

TCN’s General Manager, Public Affairs, Mrs Ndidi Mbah disclosed this in a statement in Abuja on Sunday.

Mbah said that the electricity supply was interrupted following the damage to its high tension towers T159, T160, and T161 of 330 Kilo Bolt (KV) Damaturu-Maiduguri Transmission Line in the North East.

She said TCN had completed the new foundation of Tower T159 and had equally procured all the necessary tower members and materials for the replacement of the other two damaged towers.

According to her, the materials are presented on the ground at TCN’s Baga Road Substation in Maiduguri and work is ongoing to make them ready for installation.

She said, The Management team of TCN led by the Acting Managing Director/CEO, Mr Sule Abdulaziz, Borno State officials led by the State Commissioner for Housing and Energy, Mr Yuguda Vungas and the Managing Director of Yola Electricity Distribution Company, Mr Baba Mustapha are at the TCN Maiduguri Work Centre for an on-the-spot inspection of the equipment/materials and ongoing fabrication work of the tower parts for the replacement of the damaged towers.”

She said Abdulaziz assured that since all the necessary equipment, materials and workforce were on the ground and fabrication work ongoing, the reconstruction work proper would soon commence at the sites as the tower foundation had been completed.

Abdulaziz said that the electricity supply would be restored as quickly as possible on completion of the tower erection work

He further explained that while the damaged towers reconstruction was ongoing, TCN was also temporarily constructing a by-pass line for temporary diversion to supply power to the affected areas before the main tower structures were completed.

Earlier, the TCN boss while addressing its engineering staff working on the project, assured them of maximum support to facilitate its speedy execution and commended them for their commitment.

On his part, the Borno State Commissioner for Housing and Energy, Mr Yuguda Vungas, assured that government would provide the necessary support and security for the work to be accomplished on time.

He reiterated the commitment of Gov. Babagana Zulum administration to ensure that light was restored in the area and promised to lend the necessary assistance to TCN to facilitate the project.

He said ‘The efforts of the state government is to provide the necessary support and equipment for TCN to reconnect the state to the national grid for his citizens to have a regular supply of electricity.

Our own part is to ensure that security is provided for human safety and the movement of materials.

We are very happy to find ourselves here today with the managing director TCN, and managing director of Yola Electricity Distribution Company.

It is a sign of the good relationship between the state government, TCN, and Yola Disco. Together we will work to restore supply to our people,” he said.

Dele Giwa (16 March 1947– 19 October 1986) was a Nigerian journalist, editor and founder of Newswatch magazine.

Early life and career

Sumonu Oladele " Baines" Giwa was born on 16 March 1947 to a poor family working in the palace of Oba Adesoji Aderemi, the Ooni of Ife. He attended local Authority Modern School in Lagere, Ile- lfe. When his father moved to Oduduwa College, Ile- Ife as a laundry man, he gained admission to that school. Dele Giwa travelled to the USA for his higher education, earning a BA in English from Brooklyn College in 1977 and enrolled for a Graduate program at Fordham University. He worked for The New York Times as a news assistant for four years after which he relocated to Nigeria to work with Daily Times.

Newswatch in 1984, and the first edition was distributed on 28 January 1985. A 1989 description of the magazine said it changed the format of print journalism in Nigeria introduced bold, investigative formats to news reporting in Nigeria. However, in the first few months of the administration of General Ibrahim Babangida, who took power in August 1985, the magazine was shamelessly flattering. It printed his face on the cover four times and even criticised " anyone who attempted to make life unpleasant for Babangida" . Later, the paper took a more hostile view of the Babangida regime.

Giwa married an American nurse in 1974. His second marriage, to Florence Ita Giwa, lasted 10 months. He later married Olufunmilayo Olaniyan on 10 July 1984, and they were married until his death in 1986. He was survived by his mother, wives and children.

Dele Giwa was killed by a mail bomb in his Lagos home on 19 October 1986. The assassination occurred two days after he had been interviewed by State Security Service (SSS) officials. In an off the record interview with airport journalists, Lt. Col. A. K. Togun, the Deputy Director of the SSS had claimed that on 9 October Dele Giwa and Alex Ibru had organised a media parley for media executives and the newly created SSS. Togun claimed that it was at this meeting that the SSS and the media executives reached a secret censorship agreement. Under this agreement, the media was to report any story with potential to embarrass the government to the SSS before they tried to publish same.

Giwa had been invited by the SSS to their headquarters for the first time on 19 September 1986 after writing an article in which he described the newly introduced Second- Tier Foreign Exchange Market (SFEM) as " God' s experiment" and suggested that if they failed, the people would will stone their leaders in the streets. Giwa was interviewed and his statement taken by two SSS operatives. He was later taken to meet with Lt Col Togun, the deputy director of the agency in his office. Togun is reported to have told Giwa that he

found nothing offensive in the story as Giwa had also stated in the same story that he was hopeful that Babangida seemed determined to make SFEM work.

In 2001, General Ibrahim Babangida refused to testify before a national human rights commission about the Giwa murder. Babangida, Hakilu and Togun went to court and obtained an order restraining the commission from summoning them to appear before it. The Chairman of the commission commented that the commission had the power to issue arrest warrants for the trio but decided against this " in the over- all interest of national reconciliation" .

In 2008, the Government of Nigeria named a street in the New Federal Capital Abuja after Dele Giwa, as they did with other activists such as Fela Anikulapo Kuti and Ken Saro Wiwa.

Kwara on Friday directed an immediate, but temporary closure of some grant aided schools in Ilorin pending the resolution of a Hijab controversy in the schools.

Kemi Adeosun, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education and Human Capital Development, said in a statement that affected schools are the Cherubim and Seraphim (C&S) College, Sabo Oke and St. Anthony College, Offa Road.

Others are the ECWA School, Oja Iya, Surulere Baptist Secondary School and Bishop Smith Secondary School, Agba Dam.

Also affected are the CAC Secondary School, Asa Dam, St. Barnabas Secondary School, Sabo Oke, St. John School, Maraba, St. Williams Secondary School, Taiwo Isale and St. James Secondary School, Maraba.

The closure comes as a government committee comprising representatives of the Muslim and Christian communities meets on Friday to iron out the differences between the two religious communities.

“Government calls for calm and urges parents and religious leaders to avoid actions or comments that may further split the two communities,’’ Adeosun stated.

Borno state government has sealed three national banks for not updating their property records in different locations in Maiduguri metropolis.

The Special Enforcement Operation was led by Executive Secretary Borno Geographic Information Service, BOGIS, Engr. Adam Bababe.

According to him, the agency had written series of letters in June and August, 2020 as well January this year to landlords of all the organizations but they failed to turn up.

Bababe said the Agency would take similar exercise to banks and other financial institutions across the state.

“So far we have visited some branches of national banks, it is not targeted at banks, it is property visitation during the daytime.

“Some property owners failed to come to us so we started with filling stations and then proceeded to property where NGOs and local NGOs are residing, using as offices and warehouses now we moved to commercial banks.

“Yeah, we have sealed some banks until they come to comply with our regulation, we are not to open now. Today, we have sealed three banks. Because the government needs the revenue, the government needs to update its records, the government needs to have a vibrant database of all the property in Borno state.

“It is disheartening that you find a particular bank has branches in some cities they have been complying with regulations of land use, they have been paid grant rents but then in Borno here they failed to do it because they feel the laws are not very strong so we are here to ensure that all these regulations is adhere to.” Engr. Adam said.

The Executive Secretary pointed out that for any transaction of lease of property or change of purpose to be legal, the Executive Governor must give approval.

He said out of the 183 International and local NGOs operating in the state, only 21 are duly registered.

“I have been longing to go back to school but there was no time for me, but thank God I am finally here now to learn. I have attended adult education school where I obtained my first school leaving certificate. By the grace of God, I am enjoying my studies here in school. The students here are very happy to see me in their midst and there’s cordial relationship between us.

“My dream is to learn, I want to be able to speak English Language fluently like my friends, many of them are educated. When I finish my education, whatever God wants me to use the certificate for, He will provide then.

“I wish to be like them, I mean my friends. I advise the younger ones to face their studies squarely and to obey their parents. They must not play away their precious time. Parents should also allow their wards to learn because there’s profit in learning in school.

Her class teacher, Motunrayo Busari, in an interview with Vanguard Learning, applauded her comportment, which shows her readiness to learn, describing it as excellent.

NDLEA Releases Latest Update On Recruitment 

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) says it has yet to resume job recruitment it suspended to comply with the requirements of Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 pandemic.

NDLEA’s Head of Public Affairs, Deputy Commander of Narcotics, Mr Jonah Achema, announced this in a statement in Abuja on Saturday.

He, therefore, warned the public against the activities of scammers.

Achema said that the recruitment portal circulating all over the internet was fake and that the public needed to take caution.

The agency noted that job scammers, who had created a fake NDLEA recruitment portal, had been extorting money from the unsuspecting public.

“The agency wishes to inform the general public that there is no fresh recruitment exercise going on.

“The public are warned to be wary of these scammers. All prospective applicants will be duly communicated once the screening resumes.

“It is also important to note that NDLEA will not ask for any fee from any applicant, ” he said. (NAN)

CONTRARY to statement credited to the Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige that the striking non teaching staff in the universities were given timeline of Monday February 15, 2021 to call off the ongoing strike following the Memorandum of Understanding, MoU reached with the government, the workers have said that suspension of the strike on Monday would not be possible.

The Joint Action Committee, JAC, of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions, NASU and the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities, SSANU had met with the Federal Government delegation last week over a seven-point demands that necessitated the indefinite strike embarked upon by the two unions on February 5, after the expiration of the deadline to government to address the concerns raised by the unions.

Reports had it that the meeting between the two parties last week ended without any amicable resolution, but the Federal Government team led by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Ngige debunked the report, saying that the two parties entered into MoU on five of the contentious issues.

The Minister also said that the two unions were told to consult with their organs and call off the strike before or by February 15.

A statement issued by the Deputy Director and head of press, Ministry of Labour and Employment, Mr. Charles Akpan had quoted Senator Ngige as saying, “The meeting did not end in deadlock.

“Rather, agreements were reached on some issues with timelines and these were documented as Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) and given to leaders of the two unions to go and consult their people with a view to calling off the strike latest by Monday, February 15, 2021.”

He added that five issues discussed had agreements, while only one had a proposal, which was a government proposal for the unions to go back and discuss with their organs.

But speaking with Reporters on Sunday on the possibility of suspending the 10-day old strike on February 15, National President of SSANU, Comrade Mohammed Ibrahim said they were not miracle workers to have finished the meeting on the evening on Friday, then call off the strike on Monday (today).

Comrade Ibrahim said, “We had the meeting on Thursday and Friday and we got the draft on the Memorandum on Friday and how could we have met with our organs and call of the strike on Monday? Except you want us to perform some miracle. It does not work that way. We took what they gave us on Friday between 4pm to 5pm, how would we call our organs and get their inputs?

“It is true we met and it is also true government has presented a position and we have told them that we don’t have the power to suspend strike because you are aware that the strike was declared by our congress.

“We have invited our leaders in all the branches to meet with us on Wednesday and they are coming in to Abuja from different parts of the country to consider the offer.

“The people that declared the strike are the people to call off the strike and not the leaders. The leaders cannot call off strike. Our organs were the ones that declared the strike, we have a process and the process must be followed so that we will have a reasonable and respectable solution.”

It was gathered that what was to the two unions was a draft of MoU and they were expected to go through it and make observations if any. According to findings, the clean copy had not been returned to the unions for their signature as at the time of filing this report.

Varsity Student Suffers Miscarriage After Jumping From Burning Hostel

 Some female students of the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto reportedly jumped down from the first floor of a hostel accommodation which was gutted by fire last Monday.

The hostel was named after Nana Asma’u, the daughter of the founding father of the Sokoto Caliphate, Sheikh Usmanu bin Fodiyo

According to eye witness accounts, the fire started from a gas cooker being used by one of the female students.

The Report learn that the students had put on the gas before realising that her box of matches was missing.

“She forgot to put off the gas before leaving the room to borrow a lighter from her neighbour and when she lit the lighter, the whole room was engulfed by fire and within the twinkle of an eye, the fire spread to other rooms.

“The girl and two other ladies in the room sustained serious burnt injuries and were first taken to the school clinic before being referred to university’s teaching hospital for advanced treatment,” one of the female students said.

Another eye witness, Aminatu, said that the fire started around 7am and lasted till 9am before it was put off. “We were terrified because the fire kept raging speedily; moving from one room to another.

“There was some sort of stampede because everyone ran out of their rooms at the same time. Some started jumping down from the storey building, and as a result one lady sustained spinal cord injury,” she said.

Another student, Khadija, said that a newly married lady had a miscarriage after jumping down from the building.

The hostel’s matron, Mrs Pauline Nzeh, said she was still not herself because of the shock.

“We have been warning them against using gas cooker, electric stove and heater but they don’t listen. We have been seizing these items but some would hide them and bring them out in the night,” she added.

According to her, “the fire razed six rooms and toilets and three students were injured.

“Two of the students were treated and discharged while the owner of the gas cooker is still in the hospital,” she said.

“It was a terrible thing. We were very shocked seeing our students jumping down from upstairs.

“We really appreciate their colleagues who placed their mattresses on the ground for them to land on. That was why there was not much casualties,” she noted.

Entrance search

Mrs Nzeh added that, “We will now conduct wait and search at the entrance of the hostel to ensure that no gas cooker or any contraband item is brought into the hostel.

She revealed that some of the female students have been reporting their colleagues who secretly use gas cooker since the outbreak.

The Dean Students Affairs, Professor Aminu Maude, said that a 7-man committee has been constituted to investigate the immediate cause of the fire, verify the losses and submit its report within two weeks.

He said that the affected students have been relocated to other rooms and the school management has provided them with mattresses and pillows.

“Some of the students lost virtually everything and the committee will recommend the kind of support they need from the school,” he said.

Maude, who pleaded with the students to stop using gas cookers and other items barred by the school, revealed that only one student sustained injury as a result of the fire.

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has joined the rest of the world to celebrate the Africa Safer Internet Day (ASID), which is the continent’s version of the World Safer Internet Day (WSID), held on February 9 every year.

Marking the Africa Safer Internet Day 2021, with the theme “Positioning and Partnering for Child Online Protection”, NCC’s representatives visited secondary schools in Abuja and Lagos to sensitise and educate students, on how they can use the internet productively, avoid being victims of all forms of cybercrime and deal with cases of cyber bullying.

The schools include Model Secondary School, and Government Science Secondary School, both in Maitama, Abuja; and Kuramo Junior College and Victoria Island Junior Secondary School, both in Victoria Island, Lagos.

Addressing some of the students of Government Science Secondary School, Abuja, under strict observance of COVID-19 protocols, Tokunbo Oyeleye, Deputy Director, New Media and Information Security at NCC, stated that this year’s theme was in sync with one of the focus areas of the NCC with respect to child online protection, noting that the Commission constantly sensitises young Nigerians on cyber security and its applications.

“We are here, as NCC representatives, to educate you, the younger generation of Internet users on what you need to know to keep safe while online as part of our efforts to ensure child online protection in our country in the use of Information and Communication Technology,” Oyeleye said.

She further explained that the concern over child online protection should not be limited to arresting the perpetrators, but should be more of providing education and counselling that may assist in minimising the harm on younger Internet users.

Meanwhile, at the Lagos event, Nkechi Obiekwe, Controller, NCC Lagos Zonal Office, said the protection and safety of children while they access the internet is a shared responsibility. She added that internet penetration permeates every aspect of life and adoption of the internet presents opportunities for learning.

Earlier, in a presentation, Chioma Ibe, a Principal Manager in NCC, spoke on cyber bullying and signs to watch out for. She also highlighted ways to resist online bullying and the importance of reporting cases of cyber bullying to relevant authorities.

Online bullying can have a devastating impact on young people, whose online life is a key part of their identity and how they interact socially. Cyber bullying takes many forms, such as sending abusive messages, hurtful images or videos, nasty online gossip, excluding or humiliating others or creating fake accounts in someone’s name to trick or humiliate them,” Ibe said.

Also contributing to the discussion, Chukwuemeka Monyei, the Executive Director, Like a Palm Tree Foundation, educated the students on how to mute conversation with, unfollow, block, and report anybody who engages in an act of cyber bullying toward them as a way of protecting themselves.

Oyeleye urged the students to share the knowledge they have gained during the programme with their friends and relatives towards ensuring a safer internet for all.

Pamphlets with salient printed information on child online protection, with emphasis on cyber bullying, were distributed to the students across the four schools.

The students, who participated in the intensive one day sensitisation, expressed delight for being part of such a highly educational programme and thanked the Commission for its leading role in online child protection.

In life there are people all over the world who are suffering from all sort of illness and deformities, we then wonder why such illness or deformities face such people, some even blame God for allow these things to happen to people. Many homes have been broken because of deformities.

It happened that two young children from Africa who are brothers went viral on the internet after a video of them were shared on the internet, they are suffering from body deformities which is very extreme and bad for them.

The first one in the above picture is call Moses along side with his senior brother Paul. These young brothers are suffering from a very painful spinal disorder called scoliosis that twists the spinal cord, and this also makes their muscles weak and they can do a normal day to day jobs or activities.

According to report, it was found that Paul the first born was given birth to with the condition while Moses got his at the age of 8 when he was still in primary school and he left school because the mother was unable to keep up with the fees and taking them for treatment, having no support after the father of the children left her alone when the children started having the condition.

These kids also expressed themselves of how happy they are for not going to school, due to the humiliation they face at school because of their condition, their mates compare them with animals.

Their conditions was the refered to as “Satanic Virus” by most of their neighbors who then advice their kids not to go close to them.

These kids are mostly alone, other kid run away from them and refuse to have fun with them.

As children they also have dreams as humans, Paul vision is to become a footballer just like Messi and Ronaldo as he sees on TV, and his brother wants to become a president when he grows, but their condition is not encouraging and the mother is asking the public for help.

50-year-old woman becomes JSS2 student in Kwara State

A 50-year-old woman named Folashade Ajayi has joined the Ilorin Grammar School in Kwara state.

Photos of the middle aged woman sitting alongside children who were her classmates surfaced online on Tuesday.

It is understood that she enrolled in the school as a JSS 2 student in her quest to become a teacher someday.

She also hopes to encourage people her age to follow through with their dreams irrespective of age.

Ajayi’s case stretches the list of Nigerians who continue to defy the odds towards acquiring formal education.

Earlier, seventy six inmates of the Old Abeokuta Custodial Center, Ibara, in Ogun state had graduated from the Yewa Central College of Education (YCCE) with the Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE).

In 2019, 40 inmates of the center graduated from the YCCE. 13 others were also enrolled in the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) in 2018 while 64 were awarded vocational certificates in the same year.

Similarly in 2020, a total of 615 prison inmates were admitted to NOUN for a free education scheme.
