IGP Orders Action On FBI’s Allegation Against Abba Kyari

The Inspector-General of Police has ordered a review of the allegations against Abba Kyari, a Deputy Commissioner of Police. Kyari has been accused of.

The Nigeria Police Force reaffirms its commitment to the pursuit of justice and the strengthening of its professional relationship with the FBI and other international partners.

Governor Babagana Umara Zulum announced the plan while commissioning five primary and secondary schools built by the state’s Education Trust Fund.

How My Wife Died After Rejection By 5 Hospitals In Lagos - Deputy Provost

The Deputy Provost of the Nigerian Insitute of Journalism, Dr. Dele Omojuyigbe, has narrated how he lost his wife, Omolara, while struggling to get a space for her in five hospitals in Lagos state.

 Omolara Omojuygbe, who won several awards during her active service, retired in September 2020 as the principal of Ijeododo Grammar school, Lagos.

The Deputy Provost, who took to social media to appreciate those who had supported his family during the burial, explained the harrowing experience.

He said, “We had traversed five Lagos hospitals in seven anxious hours. Sadly, we got the same cold, lethal refrain: “THERE IS NO SPACE”. Her health had reached a frightful state already, I admit. But it wasn’t irredeemable, perhaps.

My son had called me about 5 am that the doctor would like to speak with me. My heart had skipped. “Madam is not responding to treatment again”, the doctor had said. Jeez! But you assured me yesterday that the situation was under control! “Yes! Her system changed suddenly”, he riposted. “There is an issue with the area. And the pancreas has packed up”, the doctor further explained.

In no time, I arrived in the hospital with the NIJ driver. I met my wife on oxygen. I was terrified. She was croaking. The entire room vibrated. Even the ante-room shook. It was terrific. I stared at her for five minutes and bowed in grief. I mourned. The nurses appealed to me to hold myself together for the sake of my children waiting at the reception. The children weren’t aware of the development. I tidied up my face and went to see the doctor.

Doctor, talk to me’, I said. He replied quietly that he would refer my wife to the Emergency Unit of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, LASUTH, Ikeja. “There is an Intensive Care Unit there. She needs it”, he said. ‘Any hope?’ He was hesitant. ‘Don’t worry, doctor; talk to me, I have mourned
already’, I told him. “Sir, the chance is about 20/80”. What! I looked into space, struggled with myself for a few seconds, and vowed, ‘even if it remains one percent chance, I will fight with it’.

Immediately, I sent my daughter home and asked her brother to stay with me. We called a driver accustomed to emergency driving, and we moved… from the private hospital in the Igando area to LASUTH Ikeja. We were on a flight. We reached LASUTH but LASUTH failed. THERE IS NO SPACE, I was told. What do I do? Try FMC (Federal Medical Centre) Ebute Metta, the doctor said. He withheld the referral note I brought and gave me a fresh one.

I checked my wife in the Sienna car carrying us; she was breathing silently. I was afraid. I told the driver that we were moving again. Where sir? FMC. We got to FMC after much traffic and stress, being a Friday. The same lamentation: THERE IS NO SPACE. I cajoled and pleaded. But truly, they had no space. I called one of the doctors aside and sought his advice.

We got to Military Hospital. “They shouldn’t have referred you here. They should know that we don’t have ICU”, the doctor who attended to me said. ‘What next’? “Go to LUTH, Idi-Araba.

Again, we moved. At that point, my son couldn’t control himself anymore. His eyes had become red and swollen with tears. I was left with small hope and little faith. We got to LUTH. I was glad to notice that two female doctors would attend to her. Not quite! They got to her in the car, actually, and examined her. They wrote a small report which wasn’t frightening. 

My son and I read it, looked at each other, and had relief. But the doctors averred, THERE IS NO SPACE. “I don’t know how heavy your pocket is. If you have the money, then try the Spill Over in the next building. It is run by a private organization. I will attend to her there if you are lucky to find a space”, one of the doctors said.

My pocket had become lean then but I ran there still. THERE IS NO SPACE, the lady in charge told me. I ran back to the doctor and begged her to attend to my wife in the car. “It is contrary to medical ethics”, she replied. The driver saw my plight and had pity. He suggested that we move to a private hospital on the LASU-Iba expressway if I wouldn’t mind the cost. He called a doctor there who, in turn, called the medical director.

We snapped the referral note and sent it to the medical director on request through WhatsApp. He studied the note and summoned us immediately. So, we moved from LUTH at breakneck speed. Reaching Ile-Zik, Ikeja, my wife stopped breathing. She died. I checked the time; it was 5.01 pm… from 9.30 am. That is my country; my wife’s country, NIGERIA. I asked the driver to take us straight to Igando General Hospital for verification since we were going in that direction already. There, she was confirmed, BID (Brought-in Dead). My wife!

She had a good life. She was caring and loving and was on top of her profession. A Grade Level 17 officer and a school principal in Lagos, she retired statutorily in September 2020. She got a punctuality award in three different schools where she taught and was among the few principals invited for recognition at Alausa, on two occasions, for good performance (Just for the mention – nothing was added). She made me proud.

If facilities were adequate in those hospitals, maybe she would still be alive! Maybe many Nigerians who had died would be alive! For now, THERE IS NO SPACE in public hospitals.”

Why We Want To Resume Strike Over FG Failed To Fulfilled Agreements -ASUU

University lecturers could go on another strike after the federal government failed to implement agreements reached to suspend a strike by Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

The union’s chairman at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Ibrahim Inuwa, says, Only two out of the eight items including salary shartfall and visitation panel to federal Universities have been addressed.

Inuwa explained that the other items that Federal Government failed to implement including Earned Academic Allowance, Funding for revitalization of public Universities, Proliferation of State Universities, Renegotiation and Replacement of Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System with University Transparency and Accountability Solution.

He added that the timeline for the release of the next tranche of EAA stipulated for May 2021 has lapsed with dead silence from FGN. 

To avoid further accumulation of arrears of the EAA, it was also agreed that it shall be mainstreamed into the salary. This has not been implemented.

The Chairman said that the University campuses are becoming tense and restive across the length and breadth as academics are threatening to shut down activities once again, saying, “This is coming as result of the failure of the Federal Government of Nigeria to implement many aspects of memorandum of Action (MoA) it willingly signed with ASUU that ended the last strike in December, 2020.

He further disclosed that the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation (OAGF) through the IPPIS office have continued to omit their members from payment of salaries while others experience serious salary amputation.

We are convinced this is done in connivance with the University Administration through the distortion of our members personal details. Additionally, the OAGF is not fully remitting check off dues deducted from our salaries. The ultimate goal of the OAGF appears to be doing everything humanly possible to coerce members of ASUU to enroll into IPPIS and to kill the union finally,” he said.

Inuwa noted that It is obvious to the Union that the Office Accountant General is deliberately omitting their members from payment of Salaries and withholding check of dues as a ploy for victimization and coercion to enroll ASUU members into IPPIs, “This plague has been evident across all Federal Universities in Nigeria since February, 2020.

This to us is an outright act of ingratitude on the part of the Government for the sacrifices members of ASUU are making in order to establish a progressive nation. A clear case of punishing citizens for being patriotic.

The Extradition Charges - Benin Republic, Why Still Benin Republic Court Remands Igboho

The Nigeria government failed to file extradition charges against Igboho,

Self-styled Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, was arraigned before the Cour D’Appel De Cotonou on immigration-related offences by the government of the Benin Republic.

The Court ordered that Igboho, who is being tried for obtaining a Beninese passport without being a citizen, be remanded in the custody of Brigade Criminelle in Cotonou as the case will continue on Friday.

However, his wife, Ropo, who is a German citizen, was set free by the court, which didn’t find her guilty of any crime.

Igboho and his wife, Ropo, were arrested at the Cardinal Bernardin International Airport, Cotonou on Monday while trying to catch a flight to Germany.

However, the Nigeria government failed to file extradition charges against Igboho, who was declared wanted by the Department of State Services after its operatives raided the Soka residence of the agitator, killing two and arresting twelve people in the process.

Yomi Alliyu (SAN), counsel to Igboho confirmed the failure of the FG to file charges in court on Thursday in a telephone conversation night.

Meanwhile, the Federal Ministry of Justice said they are observing the extradition process in respect of Sunday Igboho arrest in the Benin Republic.

A senior staff of the ministry’s prosecutions department informed that, the condition of the anonymity that the process has already commenced by a court hearing in Cotonou.

Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN) could not be reached for comments, but his media aide, Dr Umar Gwandu said he has information so far on the case.

Meanwhile, human rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN), has warned that Igboho’s extradition could turn to embarrassment for the country if Benin Republic finds no strong evidence that he has committed criminal offences.

He said the request for Igboho’s deportation to Nigeria reportedly submitted hurriedly by Nigeria’s ambassador to Benin Republic, Gen. Tukur Buratai cannot be granted because it has not conformed with Article 18 of the Extradition Convention.

It is not sufficient to state that Igboho is wanted for terrorism and murder. The request must be supported by a statement of the offences for which extradition is requested, the time and place of their commission; their legal descriptions; and a reference to the relevant legal provision shall be set out as accurately as possible; and an authenticated copy of the relevant law indicating the sentence which may be or has been imposed for the offence,” he said.

He said that the government of Benin Republic are provisionally detaining Igboho for 20 years after which he would be released “if the requested State has not received a request for extradition from the requesting State in accordance with Article 15 of the ECOWAS Extradition Convention.

In his reaction, Prof Paul Ananaba (SAN) said Igboho cannot be deported without recourse to the law of Benin Republic and their interpretation of that law.

How Pegasus Spyware Hack Phones

NSO Group software can record your calls, copy your messages and secretly film you

It is the name for perhaps the most powerful piece of spyware ever developed – certainly by a private company. 

Once it has wormed its way on to your phone, without you noticing, it can turn it into a 24-hour surveillance device. 

It can copy messages you send or receive, harvest your photos and record your calls. It might secretly film you through your phone’s camera, or activate the microphone to record your conversations. It can potentially pinpoint where you are, where you’ve been, and who you’ve met.

Pegasus is the hacking software or spyware that is developed, marketed and licensed to governments around the world by the Israeli company NSO Group. It has the capability to infect billions of phones running either iOS or Android operating systems.

The earliest version of Pegasus discovered which was captured by researchers in 2016, infected phones through what is called spear phishing text messages or emails that trick a target into clicking on a malicious link.

The data leak is a list of more than 50,000 phone numbers that, since 2016, are believed to have been selected as those of people of interest by government clients of NSO Group, which sells surveillance software. 

The data also contains the time and date that numbers were selected, or entered on to a system. Forbidden Stories, a Paris based nonprofit journalism organisation, and Amnesty International initially had access to the list and shared access with 16 media organisations including the Guardian. More than 80 journalists have worked together over several months as part of the Pegasus project. 

Amnesty’s Security Lab, a technical partner on the project, did the forensic analyses.

What does the leak indicate?

The consortium believes the data indicates the potential targets NSO’s government clients identified in advance of possible surveillance. 

While the data is an indication of intent, the presence of a number in the data does not reveal whether there was and attempt to infect the phone with spyware such as Pegasus, the company’s signature surveillance tool, or whether any attempt succeeded. 

The presence in the data of a very small number of landlines and US numbers, which NSO says are “technically impossible” to access with its tools, reveals some targets were selected by NSO clients even though they could not be infected with Pegasus.

However, forensic examinations of a small sample of mobile phones with numbers on the list found tight correlations between the time and date of a number in the data and the start of Pegasus activity in some cases as little as a few seconds.

What did forensic analysis reveal?

Amnesty examined 67 smartphones where attacks were suspected. Of those, 23 were successfully infected and 14 showed signs of attempted penetration. 

For the remaining 30, the tests were inconclusive, in several cases because the handsets had been replaced.

However, unlike iPhones, phones that use Android do not log the kinds of information required for Amnesty’s detective work. Three Android phones showed signs of targeting, such as Pegasus-linked SMS messages.

Amnesty shared “backup copies” of four iPhones with Citizen Lab, a research group at the University of Toronto that specialises in studying Pegasus, which confirmed that they showed signs of Pegasus infection.

Citizen Lab also conducted a peer review of Amnesty’s forensic methods, and found them to be sound.

Which NSO clients were selecting numbers?

While the data is organised into clusters, indicative of individual NSO clients, it does not say which NSO client was responsible for selecting any given number. NSO claims to sell it tools to 60 clients in 40 countries, but refuses to identify them. 

By closely examining the pattern of targeting by individual clients in the leaked data, media partners were able to identify 10 governments believed to be responsible for selecting the targets: 

Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Kazakhstan, Mexico, Morocco, Rwanda, Saudi Arabia, Hungary, India, and the United Arab Emirates. Citizen Lab has also found evidence of all 10 being clients of NSO.

The company has always said it does not have access to the data of its customers’ targets. Through its lawyers, NSO said the consortium had made “incorrect assumptions” about which clients use the company’s technology. 

It said the 50,000 number was “exaggerated” and that the list could not be a list of numbers “targeted by governments using Pegasus”. 

The lawyers said NSO had reason to believe the list accessed by the consortium “is not a list of numbers targeted by governments using Pegasus, but instead, may be part of a larger list of numbers that might have been used by NSO Group customers for other purposes”. 

They said it was a list of numbers that anyone could search on an open source system. After further questions, the lawyers said the consortium was basing its findings “on misleading interpretation of leaked data from accessible and overt basic information, such as HLR Lookup services, which have no bearing on the list of the customers’ targets of Pegasus or any other NSO products we still do not seen any correlation of these lists to anything related to use of NSO Group technologies”. 

Following publication, they explained that they considered a “target” to be a phone that was the subject of a successful or attempted (but failed) infection by Pegasus, and reiterated that the list of 50,000 phones was too large for it to represent “targets” of Pegasus. 

They said that the fact that a number appeared on the list was in no way indicative of whether it had been selected for surveillance using Pegasus.

What is HLR lookup data?

The term HLR, or home location register, refers to a database that is essential to operating mobile phone networks. Such registers keep records on the networks of phone users and their general locations, along with other identifying information that is used routinely in routing calls and texts. 

Telecoms and surveillance experts say HLR data can sometimes be used in the early phase of a surveillance attempt, when identifying whether it is possible to connect to a phone. 

The consortium understands NSO clients have the capability through an interface on the Pegasus system to conduct HLR lookup inquiries. It is unclear whether Pegasus operators are required to conduct HRL lookup inquiries via its interface to use its software; an NSO source stressed its clients may have different reasons – unrelated to Pegasus – for conducting HLR lookups via an NSO system.

Since then, however, NSO’s attack capabilities have become more advanced. Pegasus infections can be achieved through so-called “zero-click” attacks, which do not require any interaction from the phone’s owner in order to succeed. 

These will often exploit “zero-day” vulnerabilities, which are flaws or bugs in an operating system that the mobile phone’s manufacturer does not yet know about and so has not been able to fix.

In 2019 WhatsApp revealed that NSO’s software had been used to send malware to more than 1,400 phones by exploiting zero-day vulnerability. Simply by placing a WhatsApp call to a target device, malicious
Pegasus code could be installed on the phone, even if the target never answered the call. More recently NSO has begun exploiting vulnerabilities in Apple’s iMessage software, giving it backdoor access to hundreds of millions of iPhones. 

Apple says it is continually updating its software to prevent such attacks.

Technical understanding of Pegasus, and how to find the evidential breadcrumbs it leaves on a phone after a successful infection, has been improved by research conducted by Claudio Guarnieri, who runs Amnesty International’s Berlin-based Security Lab.

Things are becoming a lot more complicated for the targets to notice,” said Guarnieri, who explained that NSO clients had largely abandoned suspicious SMS messages for more subtle zero-click attacks.

For companies such as NSO, exploiting software that is either installed on devices by default, such as iMessage, or is very widely used, such as WhatsApp, is especially attractive, because it dramatically increases the number of mobile phones Pegasus can successfully attack.

As the technical partner of the Pegasus project, an international consortium of media organisations including the Guardian, Amnesty’s lab has discovered traces of successful attacks by Pegasus customers on iPhones running up-to-date versions of Apple’s iOS. The attacks were carried out as recently as July 2021.

Forensic analysis of the phones of victims has also identified evidence suggesting NSO’s constant search for weaknesses may have expanded to other commonplace apps. In some of the cases analysed by Guarnieri and his team, peculiar network traffic relating to Apple’s Photos and Music apps can be seen at the times of the infections, suggesting NSO may have begun leveraging new vulnerabilities.

Where neither spear-phishing nor zero-click attacks succeed, Pegasus can also be installed over a wireless transceiver located near a target, or, according to an NSO brochure, simply manually installed if an agent can steal the target’s phone.

Once installed on a phone, Pegasus can harvest more or less any information or extract any file. SMS messages, address books, call history, calendars, emails and internet browsing histories can all be exfiltrated.

When an iPhone is compromised, it’s done in such a way that allows the attacker to obtain so-called root privileges, or administrative privileges, on the device,” said Guarnieri. “Pegasus can do more than what the owner of the device can do.

Lawyers for NSO claimed that Amnesty International’s technical report was conjecture, describing it as “a compilation of speculative and baseless assumptions”. However, they did not dispute any of its specific findings or conclusions.

NSO has invested substantial effort in making its software difficult to detect and Pegasus infections are now very hard to identify. 

Security researchers suspect more recent versions of Pegasus only ever inhabit the phone’s temporary memory, rather than its hard drive, meaning that once the phone is powered down virtually all trace of the software vanishes.

One of the most significant challenges that Pegasus presents to journalists and human rights defenders is the fact that the software exploits undiscovered vulnerabilities, meaning even the most security-conscious mobile phone user cannot prevent an attack.

This is a question that gets asked to me pretty much every time we do forensics with somebody: ‘What can I do to stop this happening again?’” said Guarnieri. “The real honest answer is nothing.

In a statement on Monday, Spokesman of NAF, Edward Gabkwet, said Flight Lieutenant Abayomi Dairo, pilot of the ill-fated aircraft, escaped successfully.

It is unclear if Dairo was on the ill-fated aircraft alone or there were other persons on board as Gabkwet did not shed light on that.

Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Oladayo Amao, received Dairo amid fanfare on Monday just as the pilot’s colleagues hailed him for his exploits.

However, How the pilot escaped.

Pilot fled to a neighbouring community

A resident, who did not want to be named for security reasons, said after bandits brought down the aircraft, the pilot jumped down and escaped into a neighbouring community.

He said moments after the pilot escaped, bandits got to the scene of the crash to see if there were survivors.

The pilot jumped down using parachute and quickly headed to a nearby community. Upon realising what had happened, residents decided to hide him.

The armed criminals were spotted loitering around the scene of the crash probably looking for any survivor.

The residents waited until dawn and asked the pilot to dress like a typical villager and then ferried him to the town where they handed him over to the district head.

This morning two NAF helicopters and a fighter jet arrived and picked the rescued pilot. The helicopter landed near a Secondary School in the town while the fighter jet hovered around. The pilot was handed over to them and they took off immediately,” the resident said.

Air Force’s statement

The account of the resident corroborated part of what Gabkwet said in his statement.

The Air Force spokesman had said the pilot found his way to “nearby settlements”.

But in what appeared like a contradiction, he claimed Dairo later found his way to an army unit.

Using his survival instincts, the pilot, who came under intense ground fire from the bandits, was able to evade them and sought refuge in nearby settlements awaiting sunset.

Using the cover of darkness and his phone set for navigation, Flight Lieutenant Dairo was able to elude several bandits’ strongholds and maneuvered his way to a Nigerian Army Unit, where he was finally rescued,” Gabkwet said in his statement.

He added that: NAF Intelligence Surveillance Reconnaissance (ISR) platforms and helicopter gunships provided close air support to NAF Special Forces and Nigerian Army troops who were able to locate the crash site and the pilot’s parachute, while also combing nearby locations for any sign of the pilot. 

It is gladdening to note that while in hiding, Flight Lieutenant Dairo confirmed that the presence of NAF aircraft within the vicinity of the crash site helped in scaring the bandits who were after him, thus enabling him to find refuge and escape to a safe location.

Setback for security agencies

Nigerian security agencies involved in the fight against banditry suffered a major setback on Sunday as 13 policemen were gunned down in Zamfara.

Before that tragic incident, a notorious bandit took hostage of over 150 persons in protest of his father’s arrest.

He had given security operatives an ultimatum to release his father, who was reportedly freed within 48 hours after his threat.

In turn, he also set his captives free.

How Sunday Igboho Was Arrested On His Way Running To Germany

Self-acclaimed Yoruba activist, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, has reportedly been arrested.

According to SaharaReporters, Igboho was nabbed in Cotonou, Benin Republic, in an attempt to flee to Germany.

The online platform said security operatives in the West African country nabbed Igboho, who is expected to be brought back to the country any moment from now.

Attempts to reach Peter Afunanya, spokesman of the Department of State Services (DSS), over the report were unsuccessful as he neither responded to calls nor replied messages.

The DSS had declared Igboho wanted after a raid on his residence on July 1.

Two associates of the self-acclaimed activist were shot dead in an exchange of gunfire with the security operatives while 12 suspect were arrested during the operation.

At a press briefing at DSS headquarters, Afunanya had vowed that Igboho would be tracked.

The gun duel which lasted for an hour offered IGBOHO the chance to escape. Sunday ADEYEMO a.k.a Sunday IGBOHO is now on the run.

IGBOHO may run as far as he can. He may hide as long as he wants. He might have attacked security operatives as his strength carried him. But this will be the end of his shenanigans.

Soon, he will not have a hiding place. His strength will sure fail him. And the law will catch up with him. The law may be slow. But it will be steady.

Consequently, ADEYEMO/IGBOHO is advised to turn himself in to the nearest security agency. Those cheering and eulogising him may appeal to or advise him to do the needful.

He should surrender himself to the appropriate authorities. He or anyone can never be above the law. Meanwhile, those arrested will be charged accordingly.

Igboho’s arrest comes weeks after that of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Kanu was arrested abroad and extradited to Nigeria.

The duo of Kanu and Igboho have been plotting to divide Nigeria, a move the federal government warned against.

Governor Bello Matawalle of Zamfara State has warned Mahdi Aliyu, his deputy, not to dare him.

There has been a cold war between the duo since Matawalle defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

While all the senators, house of representatives members and state lawmakers jumped ship with Matawalle, Aliyu has remained with the PDP.

To test his popularity, Aliyu organised a rally last week.

The timing of the rally had sparked an outrage as Zamfara had recorded fresh killings around the period.

But supporters of the deputy governor have argued that the APC also held a mega rally in the state when Matwalle joined them.

However, the Zamfara House of Assembly has summoned Aliyu over the rally.

The action of the state lawmakers had fueled suspicion on the plot to impeach Aliyu.

In an interview with DW Hausa Service on Saturday, Matawalle said he would not tolerate any act of disrespect from his deputy.

I just read about the impeachment plan and called someone for clarification who told me that they would not accept it from the deputy governor to be organising rallies when people are being killed, he said.

As governor of the state, I promised to work together with the deputy governor, irrespective of our political affiliations. But I won’t tolerate disrespectful attitude from him.

I won’t join issue with him but if he dares me, I will give him the treatment he deserves, the governor said.

We all agreed to halt any political rally welcoming politicians into the state since we lost some of our supporters while welcoming us.

The deputy governor should have notified me of whatever he planned to do. Being of different political parties does not mean I am no longer his boss. Since the defection, he has stopped associating with me.”

Hanga said the agreement was the reason why Tinubu remained in the APC after Buhari’s first term

The founder and pioneer national chairman of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), Senator Rufai Hanga, has said there was “implied agreement” President Muhammadu Buhari would hand over power to the national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu in 2023.

Hanga, who chaired one of the parties which collapsed to form the APC in 2014, told that, the agreement was the reason why Tinubu remained in the APC after Buhari’s first term.

This is an open secret. There was an implied agreement. Even in law, there is implied and expressed act. If something is expressed, there are no two ways about it. There was an implied agreement that he would take over. That is why he didn’t back out after the first tenure. If Tinubu knew that he would not benefit, he would have backed out during Buhari’s first tenure. But he knows there was an agreement, he said.

Hanga however expressed doubt that the APC will give its ticket to Tinubu, predicting a fight ahead, with power blocs among governors and some forces in the Presidency.

The former lawmaker said though the two major parties had their crises, Nigerians may in the end prefer the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) because of what he described as a woeful performance of the APC government under Buhari.

Presidency, APC mum

The reactions from the Presidency and the APC headquarters on Hanga’s allegations.

A presidential spokesperson, Garba Shehu, declined comment when contacted by our reporter.

Also, the secretary of the APC Caretaker/Extraordinary National Convention Planning Committee, Senator John James Akpanudoedehe and the party’s deputy national publicity secretary, Yekini Nabena, did not respond to phone calls.

A member of the caretaker committee and former Senate president, Ken Nnamani, simply said, “I was not in the party then.

Tinubu can’t bank on any agreement’

But in a telephone interview , a chieftain of the party and former presidential candidate, Chief Chekwas Okorie, said the purported agreement should not be a basis for transfer of power, insisting that President Buhari lacks the power as an individual to appoint Tinubu a presidential candidate because it does not exist in the constitution of the APC.

He said Tinubu should lobby, just like any other aspirant in the party.

If there was such agreement, it was gentlemanly. It does not exist in the APC constitution or any democratic norm. It does not exist in the Nigerian constitution.

If there was such agreement, it wouldn’t have been when Buhari was sworn in as president. And it wouldn’t have been written.

It was a gamble, as far as I am concerned. So I will say that if Asiwaju is relying on that agreement, he sold ‘the market’ on credit. That is the basic political description of what he did.

Will President Buhari tell the party not to observe all the necessary processes that would lead to the election of a presidential candidate and simply foist Asiwaju on us? That one will not be democratic, and it is not possible. It will be a sure way of leading the party to defeat in 2023. And I know that President Buhari would want to see the party continue after him.

That type of agreement does not affect all of us in the party, Okorie saidBuhari couldn’t have entered into agreement On his part, a chieftain of the APC and associate of the president, Osita Okechukwu, said Buhari hardly entered into any written agreement with people.

Asked whether he was aware of any agreement between Buhari and Tinubu to hand over power to the latter after his tenure, Okechukwu said, I can reasonably confirm that he appreciates the contribution of Asiwaju Tinubu to his victory.

But I am not sure of any formal agreement. I am not aware of that. Mr President doesn’t enter into any agreement with anybody, but he appreciates good deeds.

Most importantly, don’t forget that Mr President said he had become a democrat, and under democratic tenets, there is no way he can help anybody.

Nigeria Customs hortlists 2,800 Candidates For Final Screening

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has shortlisted about 2,800 applicants for the final screening in its recruitment exercise.

According to a publication, it said the screening will be held according to states of applicants at the Nigeria Customs Service training and Doctrine Command (NCSTRADOC) in the federal capital Territory between August 2 and August 6, 2021.

According to the schedule, all candidates from six states comprising Abia, Adamawa, Akwa-Ibom, Anambra, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Benue, Borno, Cross-River, Delta, Ebonyi, and Edo will have their screening at the facility in FCT, Abuja on August 2.

Those from Ekiti, Enugu, Gombe, Imo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Kogi, Kwara, Lagos and FCT will have theirs on August 4 while the rest of the candidates from Nasarawa, Niger, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, Oyo, Plateau, Rivers, Sokoto, Taraba, Yobe and Zamfara will hold their screening on August 6 still at the same facility in FCT.

The Service stated that candidates whose names were published, should report to the screening venue with original and photocopies of credentials for verification, one white short and vest (male), one brown trouser and white vest (female), a pair of white canvas shoe, two passport photographs, facemask, hand sanitizer, nationally accepted means of identification.

Candidates are requested to adhere to the arrangement and be of good conduct throughout the exercise as any unruly behaviour will lead to instant disqualification and eviction from the screening venue.

Furthermore, candidates will only be attended to at the venue and time assigned to their respective State of origin, it noted.

Presidency 2023 - Group Backs Yahaya Bello

A civil society group, Country First Movement, has expressed support for Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, who said zoning or rotational presidency is unconstitutional.

The group argued that competence and capacity to deliver should denominate the entire space of our politics as 2023 approaches.

It admonished stakeholders in the country to place priority on competency and merit as 2023 elections approach in order to solve myriads of challenges facing the country.

It faulted the recent call by Ohaneze Ndigbo that the position of President should be zoned to South East, describing such call as unconstitutional.

In a statement on Wednesday by its Convener, Chris Nwaokobia Jnr, the group argued that the 1998 meeting at the National Universities Commission, Abuja referenced by Ohanaeze Nd’Igbo did not settle the issue of zoning and or rotational presidency.

Yes, there were persuasive arguments on the need for zoning but no such thing was agreed upon. It is on record that a few months after, Chief Alex Ekwueme, Chief Jim Nwobodo and a few others outside the South – West zone were to contest for the Presidential Ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party against Chief Olusegun Obasanjo who was the leading candidate of the South - West in the PDP primaries. So where and when was zoning/ rotational presidency settled? the group asked.

I am a Nigerian of Igbo extraction, and do not subscribe to rotational presidency and there are millions of Igbo who believe that Competency and Capacity must denominate the entire space of our politics as 2023 approaches.

May I state without an ounce of equivocation that what those who believe in Igbo Presidency should do is deploy tact and diplomacy rather than blackmail and diatribe, because those who believe in competency and capacity as the linchpin for the President we crave come 2023 cannot and will not be cowed.

I implore the eminent leader of Ohaneze Nd’Igbo Chief George Obizor to helm in the rabid Spokesman of the group for Ndigbo are good students of history and do not deploy falsehood, mendacity and perfidy in pursuit of any worthy cause.

Last Saturday, the much talked about debate between Kano-based controversial Islamic scholar, Sheikh Abduljabbar Nasiru Kabara, and other clerics in the state took place.

In an exclusive interview on Saturday and Trust TV, the cleric talked about his major takeaways from it, his next line of action as well as clarification on his controversial nature of preaching. Days after the interview, he was arrested.

The much talked about debate has come and gone. What are your major takeaways from it?

Sheikh Abduljabbar Nasiru Abduljabbar: My major takeaway from the debate is that it was stage-managed even before the time, including the result and everything. The reasons are obvious, looking at the way virtually all the arrangements earlier agreed on were later altered.

It was agreed to be open, but was later made closed; that it will be broadcast live, but later changed to recorded; that I will be allowed to record, but was later denied; that different judges will be invited from at least four various sects, but later contracted only one whom we later realised was part of the petitioners against me. One of the most extreme among them, for that matter, was made to judge the debate, so how can it be fair?

In the history of debate worldwide, there was never one like this. Everything was premeditated and there was no provision for clarification of the said accusations or defending oneself, all within 10 minutes.

The person asking question was given five minutes, while the person answering it was given only 10 minutes, then the chairman or the judge was given another five minutes to comment. And, this judge from the beginning of the debate till the end, was just attacking me and supporting my opponent. In fact, he never played the role of a judge; he was with my opponents throughout the debate. Whoever watched it will attest to that.

So, you think he was more aligned with them?

Abduljabbar: It was not even about alignment; he was more extreme than the co-debaters. It was after the debate that I got all the facts, including pictures and videos that he is part of them. Even the posts on his Facebook page shows that.

People may still need further clarification on those issues that led to the debate.

Abduljabbar: What actually caused the controversy that later led to the debate was that there are Hadiths (sayings and traditions of the Prophet, PBUH) that were created and injected into Islamic books that are downplaying our Holy Prophet.

Before, only Muslims have access to these books, but with advance in information technology where these books are uploaded on the internet, the infidels now succeeded in adulterating them, setting up channels fighting Islam and promoting Islamophobia. I have known these for quite a while but decided to maintain the status quo, but things have now changed.

This is why I conducted rigorous research, fished out these ‘false Hadiths’ and educate people about them, especially those trying to tarnish his image or trying to portray him in bad image.

So, it is this denial that they think is the offense. When they discovered that people will not be on their side if they present those facts as I did, they adulterated it by cutting and joining parts suitable to them.

When the issue of the debate arose, they changed the plan; instead of discussing topics, they ended up discussing words. If I discuss so many Hadith and concluded on a particular meaning, they just pick that meaning and ask me to show them where it is. Meanwhile the main clip they extracted from was not like that.

I tried as much to clarify, but they insisted I should do so in 10 minutes, which was not going to be enough.

You were heard in one of your audio clips a day after the debate apologising, what exactly are you apologising for?

Abduljabbar: After denying me the right to explain and clarify where I sourced these issues for people to understand, people got confused and concluded that those issues were actually not in those books, that I created them. So, the environment became very hot, people became furious.

Ideally, people will think that everything was alright with the debate because even when I asked of the debate’s terms and conditions, I was told that everything was in the invitation letter, while they were not there.

Those who don’t know all these intrigues, only saw me sitting down, being asked questions and I was responding ‘there was not enough time’, then concluded that those issues were actually from me. So, they became furious and there was tension everywhere. Those close to me suggested that ‘since they were forced to misunderstand you, just tell them you have recanted those issues’ for people to calm down.

My hope and prayer are: if we later win in court, then maybe there could be the possibility of organising another one (debate). I may be given my right to fair hearing where I will clarify everything and confirm to the world that these issues were actually in those books. God forbid, they were not from me. I recanted them not because I have accepted them as mine, but for peace sake.

So, are you planning on going to court over this issue again?

Abduljabbar: Of course, that is what courts of law are meant for. Even before this, we were in court regarding the shutting down of my mosque and denying me the right to preach. The court had even issued an interim injunction directing them to maintain the status quo pending when it will give final verdict, but they failed to comply and still went ahead to organise this debate.

The state government said your apology is not complete as it has not followed the laid down procedures. What will you say about that?

Abduljabbar: I don’t even understand the commissioner that made those utterances anymore. Sometimes, he pretends he is with us, but sometimes shows he is with other clerics. This is not even supposed to come from a learned person like him. Government is not God, so it cannot be asked of forgiveness; talk less of accepting or rejecting it.

He even went ahead to say that the gravity of the offense is not even forgivable. You see, this is even denying a Qur’anic verse, as nowhere has Allah said he will not forgive his servants. “Allah forgives all sins,” is what Allah says in the Qur’an.

After this debate, what will be your next line of action?

Abduljabbar: We have already instituted a legal action challenging the shutting down of my seminaries and the right to preach since the day government decided to announce the measures. The court that even stopped me from talking later exempted the debate from the issues, and all the issues I have been discussing are related to the debate, and that is why I kept talking about them. The battle will continue in the court for now.

We heard that you were invited by the police on Monday. Did you go?

Abduljabbar: I couldn’t go on that day, but I later answered them.

There are reported plans by Kano State government to arraign you for blasphemy, incitement and other sundry offences, what’s your take?

Abduljabbar: As long as the court will be just and fair and give me the right to fair hearing, I have no problem with that. Court cannot decide by hearing from one party. So, I have nothing to fear.

I will explain to them that my preachings are neither trying to attack the Prophet nor the issues created by myself. I was only unjustly misquoted. I am ready to prove to the court beyond reasonable doubt that all the issues I discussed have their sources.

Many people have tagged your mode of preaching as controversial. Do you see yourself as one?

Abduljabbar: How will my preaching not be controversial, after all they have cut and joined it? No one was ever treated the way I was treated. You lecture for three hours and someone will just extract five minutes from it or even look for a different lecture and join. They all did this to me.

But when everything was okay, my audience size was growing every day. If I am actually attacking the Prophet, how will my followers keep increasing in a city like Kano that is very popular worldwide in terms of its love to the same Prophet?

How could they keep growing if I am actually attacking what they love? This is far from being truth.

It was the governor that ordered all the Imams in the state to make sermons and preach against me to incite people. Will the people wait for incitement before they take action if I actually attacked the Prophet? Kano people are not like that. In fact, even after the incitement, it was the opposite that happened. My follower-base has increased and my preaching listenership has peaked.

I keep telling the governor that I don’t hold any grudges against him; that the problem I have with him does not affect his office. He should try and understand me and live peacefully with me. I have nothing against him. All he has been hearing about me politically are not true; I am neither a politician nor fighting for any politician.

And why don’t you maintain the status quo like other scholars?

Abduljabbar: Those other clerics kept quiet because they are not aware of the current trends of the infidels to uncover these issues. Before, these people never draw cartoons to ridicule the Prophet. Muslims failed to understand that these people extracted those things from some of those books I was raising alarm on. But now things have changed and Allah has given me the wisdom to discover that those Hadiths were false.

 Lastly, what message do you have?

My message is first to clerics; they should understand that religion is about facts, and there is no way you should compel your understanding on others. I am not the only person working with these books. But, there are other Islamic sects who do not even believe in these books entirely, millions of them.

Shiites for instance are estimated at over 300 million people globally, yet they don’t believe in these books and that has not stopped them from being Muslims, so also the Qur’aniyyuns.

But, whenever I am asked why I don’t keep quiet, I always reply them with: how can we address this problem of undermining Islam by the infidels? Everyone knows about these issues, yet no one is talking about it.

How Army General Killed, Wife Abducted In Abuja

 

Hassan Ahmed, a Major-General of the Nigerian Army, has been murdered in Abuja.

Ahmed, who was recently appointed director at army headquarters, was shot dead in Abaji area of the Federal Capital Territory on Thursday night.

The assailants, according to a family member, also kidnapped his wife.

The couple were said to be returning from Okene in Kogi State when they ran into an ambush.

In a statement, Brig.-Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, army spokesman, confirmed the death of Ahmed.

He said the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Farouk Yahaya, had already sent a delegation to condole with the victim’s family.

Nwachukwu also stated that members of the Nigerian Army Officers’ Wives Association (NAOWA) led by the Deputy National President, Mrs Stella Omozoje, have also visited the family to condole with them.

The statement read, With a heavy heart, the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Farouk Yahaya, Officers and Soldiers of the Nigerian Army regret to announce the passing on of Maj.-Gen. Hassan Ahmed, a former Provost Marshall of the Nigerian Army.

The sad incident occurred when the senior officer’s vehicle was attacked by gunmen while transiting along Lokoja – Abuja road yesterday 15 July 2021.

A delegation from the Army Headquarters led by the Chief of Policy and Plans (Army) Maj.-Gen. Anthony Omozoje has visited the widow and other members of the bereaved family.

Members of the Nigerian Army Officers’ Wives Association (NAOWA) led by the Deputy National President, Mrs Stella Omozoje have also visited the family to condole with them.

The remains of the deceased senior officer will be buried at the Lungi Barracks Cemetery, Abuja by 10am on Friday.

The attack happened hours after the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero, asked President Muhammadu Buhari to do more to protect Nigerians.

The Emir said this when Buhari visited his palace on Thursday.

The Cameroonian authorities have congratulated Nigeria over the arrest of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Mr Felix Mbayu, a Special Envoy from President Paul Biya of Cameroon, congratulated Nigeria when he was received by President Muhammadu Buhari in Abuja on Tuesday.

He said Biya looked forward to a situation in which Nigerian territory would not be available for the Ambazonian movement to destabilize Cameroon, as some people are taking advantage of crises in the two English speaking parts of Cameroon to break the country apart.”

Like IPOB, Ambazonia is seeking to break out of Cameroon.

Mr Mbayu, who is also Minister Delegate in Charge of Cooperation with the Commonwealth, said President Biya was happy with the role Nigeria was playing in Africa.

He said the two neighbours shared not just borders and historical ties, but also common challenges.

These challenges border on security specially, and it is incumbent on us both to find common solutions, he added.

Buhari, while speaking, said Nigeria would offer the best support possible to ensure that the Republic of Cameroon remained an indivisible country.

The President, while saying Nigeria was acutely aware of the separatist agitation by the Ambazonian movement, stressed that it was in the interest of Nigeria to ensure that Cameroon is stable, and we will be steadfast in our support for you.

Buhari, in a statement issued by his spokesman, Femi Adesina, said Nigeria and Cameroon shared historical ties and common borders, which make it imperative for the two countries to look out for each other’s well-being.

That was why when I first came to office in 2015, I immediately visited all our neighbours, because we are very clear about the value of good neighbour lines.

You will have problems if your neighbours are not cultivated. And our relationship with Cameroon had been very clear since when I was serving in the military. The country offered us needed support during our Civil War,” the President said.

Reps Warn FG - Reason Don’t Arm Fire Fighters

The House of Representatives has urged the Federal Government to jettison its move to arm personnel of the Federal Fire Service.

The government had announced its plan to present before the National Assembly a bill to repeal the Fire Service Act and grant firefighters the power to bear arms to protect the firefighters from mob attacks while carrying out their duties and responding to emergencies.

But the House, while adopting a motion on notice moved by Thomas Ereyitomi, urged the government to halt the move.

Ereyitomi said the announcement had caused anxiety to the public due to the reckless use of firearms by those licensed to use same by their position as security agents resulting in death or grave injuries to citizens.

He noted that the Federal Fire Service is a civil outfit and not a security agency, adding that it was not logical to allow personnel of the outfit to bear firearms, as they do not require such arms to carry out their duties.

Air strikes from fighter jets targeting bandits have claimed the lives of a woman and her four children at Sububu, in Zamfara State.

Multiple sources told that, the aircraft belonging to the Nigerian Air Force was targeting bandits at the expansive Sububu Forest located between Shinkafi and Maradun Local Governments when the unfortunate incident happened.

Sububu Forest is one of the major hideouts of bandits in Zamfara.

From the forest, they launch attacks on travelers on Sokoto-Gusau Road as well as villages in Sokoto and Zamfara States.

Sources said the aerial missions were conducted around 2pm on Monday.

In phone interviews, four different persons confirmed that the fighter jets missed their targets by dropping the bombs on the Sububu village, rather than the bandits’ enclave in the forest.

The bombs killed a woman and her four children. Two of the kids, a boy and a girl, were teenagers. One elderly woman was also wounded in the attacks, a Sububu resident he said.

He said a new Friday mosque built by a bandits’ kingpin, Halilu Sububu, was also destroyed during the attacks.

The source said nobody was trapped in the mosque because the attack happened after worshippers had observed the afternoon prayers.

Another source said that there was suspicion that the jets used the GPS coordinates of some expensive smartphones stolen from Sokoto that were being charged at the village.

You know they own Sububu (village). Nobody goes there, not even security personnel and other officials, he said.

NAF spokesperson, Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet, confirmed the multiple airstrikes on the area to PRNigeria, an online PR platform which usually shares official security press statements but did not comment on the deaths of the victims.

The platform reported that 120 bandits were killed by the airstrikes.

Commodore Gabkwet said the military carried out the precision airstrikes on the armed bandits after an intelligence and identification of the locations to avoid collateral damages.
