The Biography Of Ladi Kwali........


The history of the Hadiza Ladi Kwali she was born in1925 in the village of the Kwali in Gwari town region of the NBorhern Nigeria, her common occupation among the women, she is professional in pottery.

Ladi Kwali she learn the skills from her aunty using the traditional method of coiling, during her first professional year, her traditional culture environment move her to produced pottery many pieces that were influenced by her Gbagyi tradition with her personals idioms.


Ladi Kwali he made many things like water jars, cooking pots etc. from coil of clay, beaten from the inside with a flat wooden paddle, decorated with incised geometric and stylized figurative pattern.

The Ladi Kwa She made a several of her pots were acquired by notable figure for decorative purpose including the Emir of Abuja; Alhaji Sulaiman Barau, in his care, the pots were spotted in 1950 by the Michael Cardew the pottery chief officer in the department of commerce and industry in the colonial in Nigeria Government.


The officer Cardew interested in her in 1954 she joined Cardew's pottery training center in Abuja. She was center in only female potter, she learn the western techniques in many pottery, like wheel throwing and glazing and she made dishes, bowls and beakers.

However, she also continued to produce pots using her traditional hand experience in her traditional hand building and decorating techniques through her contact with officer Cardew, she became all around the world and became the Nigerian best know potter. in the late 1950's and she in 1960 Ladi work was shown to great in London at the Berkeley Galleries.

In 1962 she was awarded a member of the order of the British  Empire and honorary doctoral degree from Ahmadu Bello University Zaria in 1977 an she also received the Nigerian National Order of Merit Award in1980 and national honour of the officer of the Order of the Niger in 1981.

Ladi Kwali she is the woman in the Nigerian Currency note, the Twenty Naira note (N20). Dr. Ladi Kwali she die in Minna on the 12 of August, 1984 at the age of 59 she left a great legacy in Nigeria.
